Kalian kenal Fall Out Boy? The Cure? Panic At The Disco? Atau Killing Me Inside? Alone At Last?Yeah, itu adalah salah satu dari deretan band-band beraliran emo-core/emo-screamo. 

Sedangkan emo sendiri adalah salah satu aliran musik yang berasal dari Wahington DC dan muncul pada awal 1980-an. Emo (pengucapan /imoʊ/, singkatan untuk emotional music, adalah gaya musik rock yang mempunyai ciri khas musik yang melodius, disertai lirik yang ekspresif dan berisi pengakuan. Musik-musik emo penuh dengan tema cinta yang melankolis, patah hati, depresi, hancur dan terluka. 

Dilihat dari band, band-band emo terbagi dalam berbagai tingkatan, yaitu:

 emo pure : ex. dashboard convensional
emo rock : ex. taking back sunday
emo punk : ex. aiden
emo core : ex. alesana(screamo)

Namun emo sepertinya telah berkembang jauh melampaui dunia musik saja. Emo sekarang malah lebih sering dihubungkan dengan fashion daripada musik.

Istilah emo ini kadang kala langsung dirujuk pada jeans ketat yang dipakai cowok dan cewek juga, poni rambut yang panjang dan disisir ke satu sisi wajah dan menutupi salah satu atau malah kedua mata. Potongan rambutnya lurus, kaos ketat (biasanya berlengan pendek) bertuliskan nama-nama band emo, ikat pinggang berkepala besar, sepatu kanvas atau sepatu hitam yang sering kali nampak tua dan lusuh, dilengkapi dengan 

kaca mata berbingkai hitam tebal.Gaya berpakaian ini disebut dengan istilah fad.

Belakangan, media menghubung-hubungkan emo dengan stereotype seperti emosional, sensitif, pemalu, tertutup, atau cepat tersinggung. Parahnya, mereka juga menghubung-hubungkan karakter emo dengan depresi, suka melukai diri sendiri, dan bunuh diri.

Namun terlepas dari semua itu, emo adalah salah satu tren musik yang akhirnya berkembang menjadi suatu gaya berpakaian dan cara bergaul. Seperti juga gaya hidup lainnya, ada sisi negatif dan ada sisi positif di dalamnya. Mengapa banyak orang yang menentang dan membenci emo? Tak semua emo kids (penganut aliran emo) bersifat emosional dan suka menyakiti diri sendiri. Dalam satu situs emo, www.emo-corner.com, disebutkan bahwa 'emo people are not all suicidal and they do not slit their wrist!' Jadi, are u dare enough to be called emo kids? (kpl/wiki/le/ec/npy)
